Creative Spotlight: Amsie

October 14, 2010

Creative Spotlights are part of the THS dedication to Handmade Christmas 2010. I’m bringing you the goods, showing off the talents of some of my favorite creators!  Just a reminder, there are several different ways to participate, and several different reasons why you should consider joining us for Handmade Christmas 2010.

Not sure if you are familiar, but there are a few design and style elements that I am crazy about.  A wreath on a door. Glass serving dishes. Ribbons. Bows. Buttons. And without a doubt, a ruffle and a pleat.  Therefore, without a doubt, I’m crazy for Amsie.

Amy, the designer behind the wonderful classic lines in the Amsie collection, says that her desire to create started at a young age.

“My creativity started churning when I was 9 years old, when my grandmother bought me a mini sewing machine for Christmas. Later on in high school my aunt took me to the fabric store had me pick out a dress pattern and fabric of my choice and she walked me step-by-step through the instructions. I loved every minute of it.”

Amy’s continued to chase her dreams after high school.

“My mother and I were at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale for a tour of their Fashion Design department. I was in heaven, I begged my mother to allow me to go with tears in my eyes.”

After receiving her Associates in Fashion Design at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, Amy transferred to the International Academy of Design and Technology in Tampa, FL to complete a Bachelor’s of Fashion Design and Merchandising.

Amy continued to harvest creative energy by working towards her dreams.

“Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, it did. I met several ambitious and talented friends who helped pull together five different fashion shows where we showcased dresses, jackets, tops, jeans, handbags, and swimwear.”

Her continued success may be credited to Amy’s ability to focus on her strongest design abilities, which lead to great opportunities for her career.

“After designing for the various fashion shows I realized that my niche was swimwear, unique swimwear. A local modeling agency contacted myself and a good friend and asked if we could take custom orders for the swimwear portion of the future models fashion show. We made patterns and sewed tirelessly while also working part-time jobs, finishing school, and completing internships to design about 15 custom swimsuits for two years in a row.”

After school, Amy took a great position in merchandising and felt her passion slipping away.  After realizing that the only thing she had sewn in several years was one quilt, she started to feel her heart being called back to designing her own pieces.

When she found a seemingly empty market, she knew it was her time to start creating again.

“After planning a wedding and not being able to find unique affordable bridesmaids gifts, I realized there was a demand for one-of-a-kind custom boutique style handbags and gifts. So I dusted off the sewing machines and started to create clever giftable items that you would be thrilled to give to someone special, or even to spoil yourself.”

And that’s how Amsie was born.

I must admit, I am crazy for Amy’s designs!  I wouldn’t mind spoiling myself with a gorgeous clutch for a special occasion, or even an everyday occasion  😉

Amy designs more than just clutches, too. You can find other accessories in her shop, including broaches, clips, and pins as well!  I just love these beautiful hair pins!
